Dec 07, 2005 · Today I was setting up a VPN server and had to figure out what ports and protocols to enable on our Cisco PIX 515E firewall. Here they are: PPTP: To allow PPTP tunnel maintenance traffic, open TCP 1723. To allow PPTP tunneled data to pass through router, open Protocol ID 47. L2TP over IPSec To allow Internet Key Exchange (IKE), open UDP 500. Many routers have the option PPTP / L2TP pass-through. Enable this option to connect via PPTP, L2TP or IKEv2 VPN. Enable this option to connect via PPTP, L2TP or IKEv2 VPN. If your router doesn’t have this option, you need to open the ports manually. PPTP traffic uses TCP port 1723 and IP protocol GRE (Generic Routing Encapsulation, IP protocol ID 47), as assigned by the Internet Assigned Numbers Authority (IANA). PPTP can be used with most firewalls and routers by enabling traffic destined for TCP port 1723 and protocol 47 traffic to be routed through the firewall or router. TCP ports 502, 501, 443, 110, and 80; L2TP uses: UDP ports 500, 1701, and 4500; IKEv2 uses: UDP ports 500; PPTP uses: TCP ports 1723 or Protocol 47 (GRE) If you can connect over any of those, you should be able to use at least one of our connection methods.
